An Obama Presidency: The end of Imperial Democracy and how it is anticipated by the rest of the World.

The votes have been cast and Sen. Barack Obama is now the President-Elect of the United States. How you anticipate his Presidency depends upon how you voted on November 4th. The matter discussed here is how an Obama Presidency appears in the eyes of the rest of the World. Over the past eight years, The United States displayed what could be called Imperial Democracy to an unbelieving world and has lost much of the admiration of a World that had at one time respected us. It took the Bush Administration a few short months to shatter the image of America, as it bullied its way through the Middle East and other regions of the world. One of the many difficult jobs ahead for an Obama Administration is to rescue what is left of our reputation, and rejoin the rest of the World. They are waiting anxiously for us to do so!

After wining “The Cold War” with the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, The United States remained the lone “Super Power,” with no one to challenge it. It was the first time since 1941 when the U.S. was not facing a formidable enemy. Our first reaction was to “take a rest” as the Clinton Administration chose a “better late than never” policy in the 1990s, especially in the Balkan conflict in Bosnia. We began to cut back on our intelligence, spending for national defense and appeared to be lulled into a malaise. We allowed the Taliban to come to power in Afghanistan, as once we lured the Soviet Union into their “Vietnam,” we forgot about it. It wasn’t until the War in Kosovo that the United States began to act as a world leader. During the same years, the Neo-Conservatives had their own agenda, going back to the 1990s, and that was to spread “democracy” anywhere it could, especially the Middle East. We witness and continue to suffer under this doctrine with the War in Iraq. With our unilateral decision making for world order, we really have pissed off the rest of the world!

The votes on November 4th had hardly been counted when the world press began to publish their hope for a new America under an Obama Presidency. Leaders throughout the World heralded a new era of American Foreign Policy, one which America will rejoin the rest of the nations of the World in international affairs. Within moments of his victory, Germany’s “Spiegal” headlined ”America Has Redicovered its Political Calling” and in another article stated that Obama’s election was ”An Offer of Reconciliation to the World” “Al Jazeera” proclaimed ”A new dawn of American leadership is at hand.” In Russa, “Pravda” proclaimed that “”Eight years of Hell are over” and that ”in choosing Obama, the people of America have opted to come back into the international fold. Welcome back, friends!” Obama’s victory in Romania was heralded in ”in hoping that US=Romania alliance will strengthen further” in “BalkinInsignt.” In Israel, there was concern as the “DEBKAfile” reported that Obama’s support for a new Middle East policy “based on drawing Damascus out of its alliance with Iran, Israel could find itself on a collision course with "a potential Obama presidency.” The exact course of American Foreign Policy is still unclear at this time, but Barack Obama’s initial statement on his website is the he “will continue the long American tradition of smart diplomacy to keep the country safe while improving America’s standing in the world.” That would indicate that America is again to rejoin the rest of the world and leave behind unilateral Imperial Democracy. America has been the beacon of light for the rest of the World in the second half of the 20th Century. That light was eclipsed by the Bush Administration’s Foreign Policy. It’s time again to resume our unique position and lead into the 21st Century!

World celebrates the Obama victory!

Your remarks regarding

Your remarks regarding Foreign Policy are well taken to a point, but the point is that we haven’t had one with a common purpose with the rest of the world since George H.W. Bush and the First Gulf War. Obviously, that did not include Iraq. We cannot be all things to all people, but we have undertaken the role of first, the “Leader of the Free World” and in the vacuum of a Soviet presence, “World Leader” after its fall. We continued that role under the first Bush Administration, but let it dissipate under the Clinton Administration and abandoned it under the present Bush Administration. We have been in a vacuum for the past sixteen years, but the World still looks to this nation for guidance and direction through uncharted waters. It’s time to resume that leadership. If we fail to do it, who will?

As to the fact that both the Legislative and the Executive branches of our government are now controlled by one party, we have seen that it is not a lengthy marriage. Throughout our history, the opposition party usually gains control of at least one branch of the Legislature in the next mid-term election. As to the present, The Obama Administration will have its hands tied in dealing with “The Economy” and will have little time, or money to attend to its social agenda. We continue to head for either a long Recession or possibly another Depression. The present Administration has been throwing money at it and it appears to have had little effect. It may need a fresh look and hopefully, the Obama Administration can steer us through these uncharted waters with the help of Congress. At the present, it matters little who controls Congress as the common goal is survival. If we make it through this economic disaster, the Obama Administration will have little money for the feared social change by the Right. As an Obama supporter, I hope that he can at least bring about a Health Plan similar to Germany or Switzerland, which as been proven relatively successful, compared to Great Britain or Japan. The other disaster the Obama Administration must deal with is the "Energy Crisis" and must begin the groundwork do deal with it. That is now a bipartisan issue, as John McCain supported it as well. Whatever else the Obama Administration can accomplish in the next four years is doubtful, thanks to the Bush Administration that broke the bank!

I have elected to avoid

I have elected to avoid engagement during the election process. Whether or not the American Voters elected Obama to appease rest of the world is anyone's guess. I don't think they project that far. As to the end of the Cold War, I viewed the ensuing years as a period on sophomoric arrogance - and that is equally applied - to all three political parties (third element being the Washington civil service).
Frankly, I find that the foreign policy of the past sixteen years has been in a vacuum in many ways.
Kosovo was as much a misadventure as those who think the same about Iraq. Gore was en route to meet with Primakov when the bombings of Belgrade under NATO authority began and both had to reverse direction and head to their homelands. That issue wasn't even deliberated. And 'Americana' saw it as no more than televised pyrotechnic display. On the other hand we have to remember the measures to deal with Iraq was signed on October 31, 1998. And had the UN been not bribed to the gills, Iraq wouldn't have had the impulse to renew its mischief. Of course, the rest of the world was PO'd. They were caught not only not doing thier job, but corrupted down to their tiniest cell. On the other hand, in as much as I'm not drooling over the phenomenon of the recent election, I know I am to be considered less than the the better Americans that voted for a man who won out of either belief, hatred or rage.

There is much more to be concerned about than foreign policy. But that is going to depend on a one-party country that will be ever so loving. Health care for all, the dead will rise and every kid will have a four-year delay of life's reality. Alice, The Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter will host a tea. As for the economy: There's an old quip; You can't produce a baby in one month by making nine women pregnant. The economic woes are the blisters from going along a bad route for over forty years. Look at the recent solution - slap-dash sensationalism. And Mike the merchant is still ready to provide consumers as much as they will spend. They will spend. The economy is the public who are responsible for managing their affairs. But, I won't make argument. Why bother, the media will tell all the great American thinkers what they must think.

Fads often die with maturity.
